UC Berkeley scientist to explore steroids, adolescent development

Dr. David Piekarski from the Department of Psychology, Behavioral and Systems Neuroscience Unit, University of California Berkeley, will present “Do Gonadal Steroids Impact Frontal Cortex Function and Plasticity During Adolescent Development?” from noon-1 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 6, in classroom 3A (North Wing room 318).

Pediatric cardiologist to review neonatal heart disease screening

Dr. Sarosh Batlivala, associate professor of pediatric cardiology, will give the Population Health Grand Rounds presentation, “Early Impact of a Statewide Neonatal Critical Congenital Heart Disease Screening Program,” from noon-1 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 6, in conference room SM323 on the third floor of the new School of Medicine academic building.

Physiologist to detail cardiac, metabolism UCP3 deficiency consequences

Dr. Romain Harmancey, assistant professor of physiology and associate director of cardiac metabolism research, Mississippi Center for Heart Research, will present the Department of Physiology seminar, “Consequences of UCP3 Deficiency for Cardiac and Systemic Metabolism,” from noon-1 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 7, in room CW308 of the Classroom Wing.

Harvard prof to address aquaporin-2, water balance disorders

Dr. Dennis Brown, professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School; director of the MGH Program in Membrane Biology, Division of Nephrology, Massachusetts General Hospital, Simches Research Center; and president of the American Physiological Society, will give the Cardiovascular-Renal Research Center’s Heart Month Seminar Series presentation, “Understanding Aquaporin-2 Trafficking to Address Water Balance Disorders: Informed and Unbiased Approaches,” from noon-1 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 8, in room CW106 of the Classroom Wing.

Dr. Janie Reckelhoff, chair of cell and molecular biology, will give the UMMC Group on Women in Medicine and Science Seminar Series presentation, “Discrimination in the Workplace,” from noon-1 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 8, in second-floor conference rooms A and B in the Norman C. Nelson Student Union.

UAB dentistry professor emeritus to keynote SOD Research Day

Dr. Jack E. Lemons, university professor emeritus in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Dentistry, will present the School of Dentistry Research Day 2018 keynote lecture, “50 Years of Dental- and Bio-Materials and Mechanics: Role(s) of Dentists in Biocompatibility Research,” from 8-9 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 20, in classroom R153 (lower amphitheatre).

The event also will feature poster sessions from 9:15-10 a.m. in second-floor conference rooms A and B in the Norman C.
